Johnson & Johnson to pay $ 70 million for cancer-causing powder

A jury in St. Louis, Missouri awarded a California woman more than $ 70 million in damages in her lawsuit alleging she developed ovarian cancer as a result of using Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder.

This is the third lawsuit for talcum powder lost by the company. In two previous cases, the St. Louis court ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a total of $ 127 million.

Johnson & Johnson insists that the use of the product is completely safe, claims that talcum powder causes cancer, nothing confirmed, and intends to challenge these decisions.

More than one and a half thousand women have already filed lawsuits against the manufacturer of the powder, and lawyers are investigating thousands more potential lawsuits, mostly provoked by the first verdicts.

Most of the lawsuits were filed in St. Louis, about 300 more in Los Angeles, and 200 in New Jersey, Bloomberg reports.

At the same time, a New Jersey state court last month dismissed 2 with a similar powder lawsuit, finding their scientific rationale insufficient.

Most researchers have not found a link between powder and ovarian cancer, writes the Associated Press.

However, the law firm Onder of the Onder, which represented the plaintiffs in all 3 cases in St. Louis, cites other studies that began to link the use of talcum and ovarian cancer back in the 70s of the last century.

According to these works, in women who regularly and for a long time use talc in the genital area, the risk of ovarian cancer increases by 40%.
