56 US congressmen accused Ukraine of glorifying 'Nazi collaborators'

56 US congressmen, including representatives of both leading parties, appealed to the US State Department with a request for diplomatic pressure on Ukraine and Poland for "state-funded" anti-Semitism.

“We call on you to join us and human rights organizations in the fight against anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and all forms of intolerance, calling on the Polish and Ukrainian governments to unequivocally reject Holocaust distortions and honoring of Nazi collaborators and fully investigate anti-Semitic crimes,” the congressmen wrote in a letter to the acting State Relations Committee. Among other things, Ro Hanna and other signatories named Stepan Bandera among the "Nazi collaborators."

“Among the groups and individuals who are glorified in Ukraine are Nazi collaborators Stepan Bandera, Roman Shukhevych and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, as well as the Ukrainian Insurgent Army,” the congressmen point out.

The authors of the appeal note that Poland adopted a law that punishes statements ascribing the Nazi crimes of Germany to the Polish state, with fines or prison sentences. Representatives of the Polish government say that the law is intended to protect the country from false accusations of complicity in the Holocaust.

The manifestation of anti-Semitism and the glorification of Nazi collaborationists in Ukraine, according to congressmen, is the “ProUp 2017 campaign of the year” by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, renaming streets in honor of Bandera and Shukhevych, and the activities of the “neo-Nazi Azov battalion”, which should be dismissed and not included in the National Guard under the authors of the statement. Also, congressmen pointed out the involvement of Interior Minister Arsen Avakov in the activities of this unit.

Stepan Bandera, who was the ideologue and theorist of Ukrainian nationalism, was detained by the Nazis shortly after the proclamation of the restoration of the Ukrainian state 30 on June 1941 in Lviv. At the beginning of 1942, Bandera was transported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, from which 1944 came out in September. In 1959, Bandera was killed by a Soviet agent, Bogdan Stashinsky.

“It’s surprising that such a large number of important American politicians signed such a document,” Vyatrovich said in a commentary Radio Liberty 26 April.

“When a prisoner of the Nazi Sachsenhausen camp Stepan Bandera or Roman Shukhevych, who since 1943 led one of the largest anti-Nazi resistance movements in Europe occupied by the Third Reich, is cited as an example of the honor of collaborators, then this only indicates, at a minimum, the low level of knowledge of those people who put their signature,” the historian noted.
