13 places every Californian must visit
Gold Country is a California gold rush historic site with plenty to see for history buffs and adventure seekers alike.
SF Gate collected a list of 13 locations in this region that are worth visiting for everyone.
1. Highway №49
None of the roads in the United States connects so many historic sites and beautiful landscapes like this. The most beautiful is the section from Koloma to Placerville.
2. Malakoff Diggins Historical Park
The “torn” landscape of the park is a reminder of the world's largest hydraulic shaft, where water cannons were used to wash away entire mountain slopes in search of gold. More information about the park and its schedule can be found. here.
3. Nevada City
One of the most beautiful cities in Gold Country, on the shopping street where you can buy a lot of interesting things.
4. Empire Mine Historical Park
This site used to be the largest—deepest, longest, and richest—gold mine in California. The park still preserves the buildings where the miners lived, the mine owner's house, as well as the paths along which the gold hunters walked. 5. Marshall Gold Discovery Historical Park
The place where gold mining began. There is a museum, cabins of miners, a full-size replica of Sutter's Mill and a place where you can try your hand at mining gold. More information about the park and its schedule can be found. here.
6. Placerville hardware
The oldest home appliance store in the west of Mississippi, one of the oldest businesses in California and a surprisingly organized pile of cool stuff.
7. Amador Flower Farm
In the Shenandoah Valley is a floral farm of 14 acres (5,7 hectares), with a particularly spectacular collection of day-lilies.
8. Sutter Creek
Another unusual city in Gold Country. Local attractions include live music at the Sutter Creek Theater and wine tasting at the city’s winery.
9. Narcissus Hill
The McLaughlin family began planting daffodil bulbs here in 1880; 300 of thousands of these flowers, which usually bloom from mid-March to mid-April, are now growing on the hill.
10. Murphy
Another interesting city in Gold Country, where you can taste the local wine, as well as a delicious lunch in a variety of cafes.
11. Columbia Historical Park
One of the very well-preserved cities of the Gold Rush period, which is now both a historical park and a thriving town. Here you can admire the architecture of the XIX century, as well as enjoy the delicious local ice cream.
12. Historic Park Railtown 1897
Here you can ride on mountain paths by the train of the XIX century. Trains run on weekends from April to October. More information about the park and its schedule can be found. here.
13. California Museum of Mines and Minerals
Here you can see gems, copies of tunnels in gold mines and the nugget Fricot.
