The anti-vaccine star in Illinois was long-ago vaccinated: she simply hid the document confirming this.

“Opposing mandatory vaccination is not anti-vaccination,” says Cadence Cohen, who had been vaccinated for several months when she publicly refused to be vaccinated.

The teacher, who is known to have refused the state compulsory vaccination, was in fact vaccinated from the beginning.

Cadence Cohen, a math teacher at Southeastern High School in Springfield, Illinois, chose to take unpaid leave in September over proof of vaccination or weekly Covid-19 testing, as mandated by the government mandate for public educators.

Since then, she has waged a public campaign of disobedience to the rule, even though she faced disciplinary hearings and the possibility of dismissal.

“What led me to this decision is that I am a big fan of freedom in the country and individual rights,” Ms. Cohen said. “When my employer tried to violate my personal rights—my body, my choices—I came to the decision that I had to stand up to it.”

But last week, Ms Cohen seemed to give up.

On Nov. 6, she uploaded a photo of her vaccination card to Facebook and said she also sent a copy to school district officials. The dates on the card showed she received vaccinations on June 29 and July 19, well before mandatory vaccinations were announced in August.

So why did Ms Cohen risk losing her job to protest a vaccine sanction she had already done? The teacher tried to explain this on Facebook.

“Fighting mandatory vaccination does not mean opposing vaccination,” she wrote. -This means a fight for freedom, for medical autonomy. Don't all Americans agree with freedom of choice? ".

Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker announced mandatory vaccinations on Aug. 26 as the state battled a spike in Covid cases caused by the highly contagious Delta strain.

“Our current vaccination rate is not sufficient to mitigate the sharp rise in hospitalizations from the Delta variant,” Pritzker said at the time. “In some regions, hospital administrators are asking for additional help to manage the huge volume of incoming patients, who, I emphasize again, are almost exclusively people who have refused life-saving vaccinations.”

Ms. Cohen is still on unpaid leave until Nov. 17 and has been ordered by her district to complete a “recovery plan.” After that, she hopes to return to school.

In the end, the teacher says that it was her boredom at work that made her submit.

“I didn't want to show my vaccination card because I don't think it's legal or appropriate, but if you ask me to choose between my personal beliefs and my students, my students win,” Ms. Cohen said. “I can't imagine mine.” life without teaching."
