California resident tells what it is to be a man of the third sex

When Sarah was born in 1961, in New York, she was recorded as a boy. Three weeks later, a birth certificate was issued, in which was “a girl”.

The doctors did not immediately succeed in determining the sex of the child: a genetically male, she was born with female secondary sexual characteristics and with mixed reproductive organs, reports “Voice of America".

Perhaps, she says today, it scared her biological parents, who abandoned her right in the maternity hospital.

She was adopted, and in 15 years she was a teenager under the height of the 2 meter without any manifestations of puberty.

Her adoptive parents took her to the doctors, and only 33 a year later, her father first admitted to her that he was then given a choice: to make her a boy or a girl.

“I told my father, ‘Dad, I think genetically I’m a man. Do you know anything about this?” He replied, “Yes, when you were a teenager, doctors told me that they could give you male reproductive organs and prescribe testosterone if I so chose. I told them: “No way! This is my daughter, she’s a girl,” said Sarah Keenan.

Then, without Sarah's knowledge or any involvement, the decision was made to undergo surgery and hormone therapy in order to make her a girl. She was simply told that she would not be able to have children.

This fact and the unusual appearance of the girl nevertheless did not alienate her husband David, whom she met 30 years ago.

“I love my wife, her personality is much more important to me. If genetically she is a man, physically stronger and taller than an ordinary woman, it does not bother me. The only thing that worries me is how difficult it is for her sometimes to be accepted in society,” admitted David.

She always felt that the definition of "girl" does not suit her: at school she wanted to become a scout, run with boys and make fires. If she had been given a choice in 16 years, she would have preferred to become a boy. However, today she admits that on 100% she does not fit into either of the two gender options.

A few years ago, she ensured that her birth certificate was corrected, and “intersex” was written for the first time in American history in the “gender” column.

“It is necessary to refuse operations until the child or adolescent can decide for himself whether he is willing to risk loss of sensitivity, including sexual sensitivity, in order to outwardly conform to ideas about what a boy or girl should be. Neither the government nor parents have the right to make this choice,” Sarah said.

One in 1500 to 2000 is the average statistic for children born with gender characteristics that do not correspond to the typical definition of a male or female body. But experts say that the real figure is much higher, since variations can often appear only during puberty. According to bold estimates, intersex people make up 1,7% of the population - about the same number as there are red-haired people on the planet.
