Doctors fear that the fishing town of Everglades City in Florida is threatened by a wave of infectious diseases that can be fatal, due to bacteria in the water, dirt and mold caused by hurricane Irma.

72-year-old Lee Martini died in a hospital after doctors diagnosed him with respiratory failure and internal bleeding. According to his wife Lisa, the man had long suffered from circulatory problems, which caused red spots on his legs, but after passing through the water left after a hurricane, these spots became blue-black, and Lee began to feel worse.

After Hurricane Lee and Lisa lived in a trailer that flooded during Irma, so there was damp and smelled of mold. The situation was aggravated by the fact that there was no ventilation and electricity in the trailer to at least use the air conditioner to dehumidify the air.

The wife and doctors suspect that the cause of death of the man was an infection due to dampness after the hurricane, but there is no official conclusion about the cause of death.

Another victim of infections after Irma was 80-year-old David Curry. While doing the cleaning after the hurricane, he scratched his leg against the tree, the wound was small, so the man did not turn to the doctors for help and did not even disinfect the cut himself. Two days later, Curry was in a hospital in critical condition with a life-threatening infection that had already destroyed his kidneys and affected other organs. To save the life of a man, doctors had to amputate his leg.

Dozens of city dwellers work daily for hours, standing in mud and water barefoot or in slippers, trying to save what is left of their homes and property. Such contact with toxic water leads to the spread of infections.

Paramedics sent a little girl to the hospital after a cut from the paper on her wrist was infected, another child was infected through a wound in her leg. Everglades City Mayor’s mother is also in the hospital with an infection after a hurricane.

Prolonged exposure to stagnant water can cause cracks in the skin, creating open wounds with a high risk of infection. Mold in homes can irritate the lungs and can cause respiratory infections. The situation is aggravated by hot weather in Florida, which, together with high humidity, creates ideal conditions for the reproduction of bacteria.
