In Florida, a crocodile ate a small dog: residents are scared and worried about children

A crocodile ate a small dog in a Florida canal. Now residents are worried about safety as the reptile is still there, reports Fox35.

People living near Shepherd Lake saw a crocodile making its way through a canal with a small pug in its mouth. They want to know what is being done for public safety as residents often kayak and play in the canal.

“He had the front paw of this dog in his mouth. The dog just went completely limp, so it was clearly already dead. It was just a dramatic sight,” said Robert Pettit, who has a house on the canal.

He and the others were greatly alarmed to learn that a crocodile had killed someone's beloved pet pug.

“When I saw the dog, I thought it was someone's pet, and the owners still don't even know what happened to him. So it was hard to watch,” said Eric Seday, who witnessed the incident on July 31st.

Sedey said that the crocodile carried the dog for several hours and then hid under the pier. The neighbors don't know how the reptile got the dog and it worries them.

“Whether the dog drowned, whether it turned out to be downstream, and the crocodile just stumbled upon it, grabbed it and swam there to start eating, I don’t know,” Sedey added.

Crocodiles are not common in this area, but the warm weather and water attract them.

"This is the first time I've heard of a dog being grabbed by a crocodile and it's just awful for the entire local community," Pettit said.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) officers “searched the area for the crocodile and the missing dog, but found neither. The FWC continues to monitor the situation."

“This thing is damn dangerous for the neighbors. It’s terrible, ”Sedey concluded.

Safety measures

This tragic situation is another reminder to keep a close eye on pets and small children playing anywhere near canals and water.

People should take simple precautions while in or near water, the FWC warns, to reduce the chance of conflicts with crocodiles:

• Keep a safe distance if you see a crocodile.
• If someone is concerned about a crocodile, they should call the FWC's toll-free hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286) and they will send a crocodile response agent to resolve the situation.
• Keep pets on a leash and away from the water's edge. Pets often resemble the natural prey of crocodiles.
• Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours and without your pet. Crocodiles are most active between dusk and dawn.
• Never feed a crocodile - it's illegal and dangerous. When fed, crocodiles may lose their natural wariness of humans and instead learn to associate humans with the presence of food.
