In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott pardoned Thomas Whitaker, who ordered the murder of his family, replacing the sentence with a life sentence, several seconds before the death penalty. He writes about it The texas tribune.

For the first time since 2007, the governor decided to change the measure of restraint from the death penalty to life imprisonment. It is noted that Whitaker "voluntarily and permanently waives the right to parole."

38-year-old Whitaker was jailed for organizing the murder of a family in order to get an inheritance in 2003. As a result of his actions his mother and brother died, his father managed to survive. As the representative of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Jason Clark, said, the father of defendant Kent Whitaker insisted on the abolition of the death penalty. He forgave his son and wanted him to live.

“I deserve any punishment for my crimes, but my father did nothing wrong. The system did it for him today, and I will do everything possible on my part to make the deal happen,” said Thomas Whitaker.

Former prison guards also interceded for Whitaker, who wrote letters confirming Whitaker's good character and stating that he was a model prisoner and assisted other prisoners on death row.

It is worth noting that Abbott served as governor for three years, during which time he approved the execution of 30 executions and decided to replace the death sentence with a life sentence for the first time.

Recall, in January, the US Supreme Court half an hour before the scheduled time suspended execution 67-year-old Vernon Madison, convicted of killing police officer Julius Solti in April 1985.
