In the US, the screening of “Gone with the Wind” was canceled for the sake of political correctness
The Orpheum Theater in Memphis, Tennessee, has stopped showing Victor Fleming's Gone with the Wind, starring Vivien Leigh, due to political correctness concerns. The reason for this was the offensive way in which black people were portrayed in the film.
"As an organization whose mission is to entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves, the cinema cannot show a film that will offend the sensibilities of a significant portion of the local population," the group's president said The Orpheum Theater Group Brett Butterson.
The film has been shown in the cinema every year for the past 34 years. This four-hour film grossed about $3,5 billion at the box office, adjusted for inflation, which is why it was recognized as the highest-grossing film in cinema history. The film received ten Oscar awards. Actress Hattie McDaniel, who played the black maid Mammy, became the first African-American woman in history to receive an Oscar (award for Best Supporting Actress in 1940).
This year, the picture was shown on August 11 and coincided with events in Charlottesvillewhere violent clashes occurred far right activists and their opponents on the basis of the decision of local authorities to dismantle the monument to the commander of the Southern army, General Robert Edward Lee. The movie was criticized for showing "an outdated, romanticized view of the good old South." Management decided to cancel the show in 2018.
