Russia has banned the sale of some wines from the US
The Russian Consumer Rights Protection Authority (Rospotrebnadzor) has banned the sale and began withdrawing from circulation several wines made by major US manufacturers. One red and two white wines of Geyser Peak Winery, Crane Lake Cellars and Delicato Family Vineyards are subject to seizure.
As stated in the document, "according to the results of the examination, Gnarly Head Chardonnay revealed high levels of phthalates; wines of Gaiser Peak Merlot and Crane Lake Moscato revealed phthalates and pesticide biphenazate in concentrations exceeding established standards."
Russian officials claim that the substances found in the wines "can cause functional and later organic changes in the central and peripheral nervous system, endocrine system, as well as oncological diseases and problems with infertility in men and women."
The US wines seized by Rospotrebnadzor were in great demand from Russian companies selling alcohol in the country: all three alcoholic beverages belong to an affordable price category, they were sold in Russia from 400 to 1500 rubles (from 6 to 230 dollars) per bottle. At the same time, as follows from the information on the websites of the elite grocery stores in Moscow, the seized wines were sold in these stores for several years.
