In New York, more than 60 water bodies are infected with toxic algae

Algae have been discovered throughout the state, from Long Island to western New York, and in water bodies ranging from small park ponds to a bay on Lake Ontario. The area of ​​algal blooms varied from several small sites to multiple lesions of water bodies throughout the area.

Four Finger Lakes lakes appeared on this list: Canandeigua, Hanioi, Kyuka and Otisko. In Lake Skaneatles, an unfiltered source of drinking water for the city of Syracuse, not a single case of flowering was found. In the 2018 year, all of the 11 Finger Lakes lakes bloomed.

Algal blooms are actually a form of bacteria called cyanobacteria. They release toxins, which in large quantities can even lead to death.

The flowering of cyanobacteria tends to peak in late August and September, especially when the weather is hot, sunny and calm. In 2018, more than 100 ponds were infected with toxic algae during the flowering season.

Among the infected water bodies were the lakes and reservoirs of such districts of the state of New York: Albany, Broome, Chatokwa, Shenango, Cortland, Delaware, Dutchess, Genesi, Kings, Madison, Monroe, New York, Onayda, Onondaga, Ontario, Orange, Osuigo, Putnam, Renseler, St. Lawrence, Saratoga, Skyler, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, Warren, Westchester, Wyoming and Yates.

Among them have the status of "Confirmed flowering with a high content of toxins":

• Otisko Lake (Onondaga County);
• Kanandagigu Lake (Ontario County);
• Lake Laurel (Suffolk County);
• Maratuka Lake (Suffolk County);
• Turtle Pond Pond (NYC).
