In New York, 40 tons of infected hams are being withdrawn, due to which one person has already died.
North Carolina company Johnston County Hams recalls 80 096 pounds (40,4 tons) of ready-to-eat ham due to suspicions that meat is infected with listeria. The use of the product led to one death, four more people were poisoned, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The recall will affect a batch of ready-to-eat ham made from 3 on April 2017 of the year to 2 of October of 2018.
The Company is recalling packages ranging from 7 lb (3,18 kg) to 8 lb (3,63 kg) of the following products: Johnston County Hams Inc., Country Style Fully Cooked Boneless Deli Ham, Goodnight Brothers Country Ham Boneless Fully Cooked , "Padow's Hams & Deli, Inc. Fully Cooked Country Ham Boneless Glazed with Brown Sugar, Ole Fashioned Sugar Cured, The Old Dominion Brand Hams Premium Fully Cooked Country Ham, and Premium Fully Cooked Country Ham, Less Salt, Distributed By: Valley Country Hams LLC.
Packages are labeled “EST. M2646 ”, they were distributed through retail stores in North and South Carolina, New York, Maryland and Virginia.
On September 27, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) received a message about listeria poisoning after eating Johnson County Hams ham. Further research revealed a total of four cases of listeriosis and one death. All cases occurred from 8 July 2017 of the year to 11 of August 2018 of the year.
The department recommends that consumers examine the contents of the freezers and throw them out or return them to the place of purchase when they detect these products.
Listeria is a bacterial infection that is mainly caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, headache, and myalgia (muscle aches). The incubation period is short and lasts several days.
