Shot at thieves, but hit a child: California store owner accused of attempted murder

In California, a store owner accidentally injured a girl who was waiting in line to have her picture taken with an Easter bunny. The man chased the thieves and fired at them, but missed. Read more about the incident told the publication ABC7.

Authorities say a man has been arrested for accidentally shooting a 9-year-old girl.

According to the Victorville Police Department, Markel Cockrell, co-owner of Sole Addicts, fired several shots at the fleeing thief but missed and hit the girl instead. Cockrell fled the scene after the shooting and was later found by police in Nevada.

A 20-year-old Adelanto man has been arrested for attempted murder and is being held on $1 million bail and is likely to face extradition back to California.

The girl, whose identity has not been released, was taken to the hospital and was last assessed as stable.

Social media posts that appear to be from the girl's family say she was shot twice in the arm while queuing to have her picture taken with the Easter bunny. She is predicted to be fine.

A report of a shooting at the Victor Valley Mall was received by law enforcement around 18:30 p.m.

“I didn’t hear anything, but everyone was running and going crazy. This is not the first time,” said Allison Ramirez, who works at the mall.

Victor Valley closed immediately, employees and customers took refuge inside.

“We were scared and waiting for someone to get us out. Luckily, the police did it,” said Silemir Valle, who also works at the mall.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department evacuated Victor Valley during a preliminary search for the shooter.

The incident caused panic among workers and customers in the area.

Now the mall has reopened, but shoppers are still worried.

“We are still nervous. It could have been me or my younger sister, that is, one of us, ”said buyer Misel Moran.
