In Indiana, a 10-year-old girl was diagnosed with an ear infection and died a few days later.

A family from Middlebury, Indiana, claims that bacterial meningitis killed their 10-year-old daughter just a few days after she complained of earache.

Abigail DiPietro's parents said the girl was diagnosed with an ear infection in early February. A couple of days later, Abbigail began vomiting, had a seizure, after which she fell into a coma and soon died, writes Fox News.

The parents of a 10-year-old child admitted that they did not know what meningitis was until it was too late. Now Tasha DiPietro-Anderson, Abbigail's mother, is warning other parents to watch for symptoms of the potentially fatal infection, which typically include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, fever, headache and neck stiffness, as listed in the advisory. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"If you have any of these symptoms, whether you think it's just a migraine or the flu, insist on getting as many blood tests as possible," DiPietro-Anderson said.

While most people recover from meningitis, according to the CDC, in some cases, death can occur "within just a few hours."

“If we had known what this could lead to, we probably would have tried to do more,” the mother added.
