In America, began to die less from cancer

Cancer is the second cause of death in the United States, but the new study says that every year fewer and fewer Americans die because of this disease, writes The Los Angeles Times.

The study was conducted by the American Cancer Society, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries.

Between 2010 and 2014, 453,8 new cases of cancer were detected for every 100 thousand people per year. This figure declined by an average of 1% per year.

More men are ill than women

On average, in 2010-2014, doctors diagnosed 502 with new cases of cancer in 100 thousands of men a year. Among women, 420,6 new cases were reported for 100 thousand people over the same period.

Between 1999 and 2008, the incidence of new types of cancer in men declined by an average of 0,6% per year. In 2014, this figure dropped by 2,2%.

Cancer deaths are falling.

Between 2010 and 2015, 163,5 deaths from cancer were recorded for 100 thousand people. This ratio has dropped by about 1,5%. Among men, this figure fell by 1,8%, among women - by 1,4%.

Types of cancer

The number of diseases has decreased: 7 of 17 is the most common cancer in men. These include prostate cancer (decreased on average by 7,6% per year), lung and bronchus (2,4%), larynx (2,3%), thick and straight pouch (1,9%), esophagus (1,6%), bladder (0,8 %), brain and nervous system (0,2%).

In women, there has been a reduction in 7 from 18 most common types of cancer. These include colon and rectal cancer (1,7%), ovarian cancer (1,6%), lungs and bronchi (1,2%), cervix (1%), bladder (0,8%), brain and nervous system (0,7% ), lymphoma (0,4%).

At the same time, the number of diseases for the following types of cancer increased: liver (in men - 2,8%, in women - 3,8%), myeloma (in men - 2,5%, in women - 1,6%), thyroid glands (2,4%), leukemia (in men - 1,6%, in women - 1,4%), kidneys (in men - 1,1%, in women - 0,4%), pancreas (in men - 1%, women - 1,1%), breasts (women 0,4%).

Some types of cancer have become more deadly.
In men, skin cancer (increased mortality rate by 2,8%), liver cancer (1,6%), oral and laryngeal cancer (1%), soft tissue cancer (0,8%), brain and nervous system cancer (0,5%), cancer pancreas (0,2%).

Women have liver cancer (2,7%), cancer of the uterus (1,9%), brain and nervous system (0,5%), pancreas (0,2%).

The role of cigarettes

The authors of the study write that 1 from 4 cancer deaths in the United States is associated with smoking. This is despite the fact that since 1964, the number of smokers in the country has decreased.

Racial and ethnic differences in cancer diseases

Black men were diagnosed with 558,2 cancer cases for 100 thousands of people. Men with white skin have 500,1, American Indians have 448,8, and Alaska Natives have 309.

Among women, the highest incidence of cancer was in women with white skin - 428,7 cases per 100 thousand people. American Indians have 409,9, black women have 406,8, Asian women and residents of the Pacific Islands have 295,8.

Researchers note that most people with black skin died of cancer from 2010 to 2015, from 239,9 to 100 among men and 159 to women.
