The people prayed, the children cried and wanted to mother, while the motel, where some residents of Panama City took shelter from Hurricane Michael, brick for brick fell apart, and tiles fell off the roof.

Shortly after noon on Wednesday, a hurricane passed through Pana-City in Florida, breaking trees in half, tearing off rooftops and scattering trucks like toys.

Two miles from St. Andrew's Bay and 6,5 miles from the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, locals and visitors are waiting for the hurricane to start at the Country Inn and Suites. About two o'clock in the afternoon, the 4 category hurricane began to scatter everything in its path.

Scarlett and Charles Hickle from nearby Linnhoven first stood in the hallway talking to other guests. Approximately in 10 minutes after the arrival of the hurricane, the roof of the motel began to rise, and storm water poured into the corridor.

Also suddenly there was a strong smell of gas and a shrill, creaking sound outside. The collapsed roof cut off the gas line of the motel.

Within two hours, no one could go outside to turn it off. Smoking was strictly forbidden, and the guests crossed their fingers so that a spark did not appear.

“I told Scarlett we had a second chance at life,” Charles Hickle told his wife. “I believe that next time we will not be heroes and will try to evacuate better.” We can buy new clothes, but not a new life. You need to trust your heart, not your head."

Ramon Zavala from Panama City said he was glad he left.

“We made a good decision to come to the motel,” he said. “The roof is blowing off and leaking, but everyone is safe.”

When the wind finally changed direction and eventually subsided, the men ventured outside and managed to turn off the gas.

Hurricane Michael caused damage to almost every house, tree and bush in Panama City.

Michael turned out to be so powerful that he would retain his strength while driving through the state of Georgia on Thursday. Meteorologists warn that it will carry a destructive wind and rain all the way to Carolina, which is still recovering from a strong flood after Hurricane Florence.
