Trump approved a record low refugee quota

US President Donald Trump signed a decree on Friday approving a quota for accepting no more than 45 thousand refugees in the next fiscal year (starts in the US on October 1). Representatives of the US administration noted that when changing the migration program, they proceed from the “safety of Americans.”

This is stated in the common White House memorandum in the name of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

“The admission of up to 45 thousand refugees to the United States during fiscal year 2018 is justified on humanitarian issues and other reasons consistent with the national interest,” the document says.

It is planned to accept no more than 19 thousand refugees from African countries, 5 thousand from East Asia, 2 thousand from Europe and Central Asia, 1,5 thousand from Latin America and the Caribbean, 17,5 thousand from the Middle East and South Asia. Trump also allowed Tillerson, “after notifying the appropriate committees of the US Congress,” to transfer unused quotas from one region to another if necessary.

Representatives of the American authorities, in a conversation with reporters, said that Washington will continue to tighten the refugee admissions program in conducting checks of internally displaced persons. “Persons applying for refugee status will undergo complex, multi-stage checks, both before arriving in the country and upon arrival,” one of them noted. “We will continue to work to introduce new vetting programs and mechanisms to improve the safety and security of refugee admissions to the United States.”
