Trump and First Lady unexpectedly visited Iraq: details of the visit

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump 26 December visited Iraq as part of an unexpected visit to Al-Asad airbase to communicate with the US military.

There, the president said that thanks to US military successes in the fight against the Islamic States ’terrorist group, he had the opportunity to withdraw the US military 2000 from Syria, writes Fox News.

“We're not losers anymore, guys. We are respected again as a nation,” Trump told troops at the base in western Iraq.

He added that the United States has fulfilled its task in Syria - it has deprived ISIS of their territories and strongholds, so now the Americans can leave this country. According to him, Türkiye agreed to destroy the remnants of the terrorist group in Syria.

At the same time, the president stressed that he “has no plans” to withdraw some of the 5000 American troops stationed there from Iraq in the near future.

This visit by Trump is his first visit to the war zone as commander in chief.

Trump made an 11-hour flight over the ocean on the Air Force One with lights turned off and windows closed, as well as military aircraft.

The national security adviser, John Bolton, who attended meetings with political and military leaders, joined the president at the air base. There were no other senior officials or members of Congress along with Trump. The President and First Lady spent about three hours in Iraq.

The president called it "pretty sad" that despite how much effort and resources the United States has invested in resolving the situation in the Middle East, his visit still had to be kept secret for security reasons.

During a conversation with journalists aboard the plane, Trump noted that the withdrawal of troops from Syria would not prevent the United States, if necessary, to deliver a “quick and hard blow” to the terrorists.
