The Washington Post: Butinu, detained in the US, was financed by a Russian billionaire
Maria Butina, accused of illegally lobbying Russian interests in the United States, received financial support from Russian businessman Konstantin Nikolaev. According to The Washington Post, Butina announced this while speaking at a hearing of the US Senate Intelligence Committee in April, writes “Medusa«.
Nikolaev, Butina said, financed the Russian organization Right to Arms, which she founded.
A representative of Nikolaev confirmed to the publication that the businessman had been in contact with Butina in 2012-2014, when she created the movement, but did not comment on reports of financial support for the organization.
Konstantin Nikolaev is the general director of the N-Trans group and co-owner of the rail operator Globaltrans. Forbes estimates his fortune at 1,2 billion dollars.
Nikolaev, The Washington Post notes, invested in American energy and technology companies, and his son Andrei, studying in the US, was a volunteer during the presidential campaign of Donald Trump.
The indictment in the case of Butina mentions "a well-known Russian businessman with close ties to the administration of the President of the United States." The name of the businessman is not called, but an assessment of his condition is given according to Forbes, which coincides with the state of Nikolaev.
Мария Бутина was delayed in the US, July 16 on charges of acting as a foreign agent without registration and collusion to promote Russia's strategic interests in Washington.
Butina, according to US law enforcement, acted in collusion with the former Russian senator, who now holds a high post in the Bank of Russia. Under this description fits deputy chairman of the Central Bank Alexander Torshin. According to Reuters, Butina in 2015 was accompanied by Torshin at meetings with the Deputy Head of the Federal Reserve and the Deputy Minister of Finance.
