Contrary to Obama's veto: Congress allowed to sue Saudi Arabia for 9 / 11
The US Senate overrode President Barack Obama’s veto on the law, which allows him to file lawsuits against foreign countries involved in sponsoring terrorism, in particular, the September 11 attacks.
An absolute majority of Senate members voted in favor of overriding the veto - 97 people, and 1 voted against.
A few hours later the same vote took place in the House of Representatives, writes USA Today.
This was a historic decision - the first time Congress overrode Obama's veto.
This is a bill that was previously approved by both houses of Congress.
Its essence is to provide the right to the families of those killed in the attacks, organized by international terrorist organizations in the United States, to file lawsuits against the states that supported the activities of these organizations in America. In this case, it will be possible to impose an arrest on bank accounts and assets of other countries in the United States.
The veto on this bill Obama imposed on 23 September. According to him, it was a necessary measure - otherwise the bill would harm the interests of US national security and create a legal loophole that would allow other countries to sue American diplomats, military and businessmen.
One of the main defendants in the September 11 attacks could be Saudi Arabia.
In April, the authorities of this country warned the Obama administration and members of Congress that they would sell US-owned assets in the kingdom worth about $ 750 billion in order to avoid freezing them if Washington passed a law allowing a foreign government to be tried in US courts on charges of involvement in 9 terrorist attacks / 11.
