From 2021 onwards, Americans will need a visa to visit Europe: what you need to know

Starting in 2021, traveling to Europe will not be as easy for Americans as it is now.

Two years later, Americans will need to submit an electronic application through the system before traveling. ETIAS (European system of travel information and authorization). The European Commission announced that the new rules will be enacted in order to improve international security, starting with 1 in January of 2021, writes Travel and Leisure.

ETIAS visa for Americans will be required to visit only 22 Schengen countries. When visiting the UK, you do not need to apply for this visa.

Currently, Americans who travel to Europe for less than 90 days do not need a visa.

A visa received through the ETIAS system will be valid for three years and for several trips, so there will be no need to apply for a new visa for each trip.

To apply for such a visa, you will need to have a valid passport, credit or debit card and email address. The cost of such a visa for Americans is still unknown.

According to the ETIAS Visa website: “Applicants will have to fill out an online form with their contact details and passport information, as well as answer some security-related questions.” If a visa is refused, travelers will have the right to challenge the decision.

There is a visa-free agreement between the US, EU countries and a number of other countries that allows citizens of 38 countries to enter the US for up to 90 days without a visa, and the Americans in turn can travel without visas to these countries.
