Prostitution in Israel: Half of immigrants from the former USSR and Eastern Europe
The Ministry of Social Security of Israel said that more than half of the prostitutes in the country come from the countries of the former USSR and Eastern Europe.
According to a study, there are about 12 thousand people in Israel who are involved in prostitution. Among them are 5% men, 11% minor women, 62% women with children and 20% women with an academic degree.
Data on the ethnic composition of prostitutes is reportedly based on a survey of 700 “priestesses of love,” of whom 52% were from the former USSR and Eastern Europe. Why these two populations were combined in the statistics is not explained. It is also unknown how many of the respondents were citizens of Israel and other countries.
The vast majority - two thirds of the women surveyed - began to engage in prostitution for economic reasons, another 7% - due to drug use. Every tenth woman began engaging in prostitution before the age of 18.
The scale of the prostitution business is estimated at 1,2 billion shekels per year (approximately $300 million). 43% of this amount is earned by women who receive clients at home or in private apartments, 18% each by escort prostitutes and strippers, and another 16% of income comes from employees of massage parlors.
Как reported earlier by ForumDailyIsrael’s Ministry of Tourism is concerned about the increase in the number of women from the countries of the former Soviet Union who provide sexual services. These women, according to the department, arrive in Israel on a tourist visa.
