Winners of the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will receive special medals made from waste.
The Brazilian Mint decided to produce medals from recycled materials, reports the publication Share America.
The rewards are made from silver produced from recycled mirrors, solder residues and even films from X-ray plates. Recycled bottles are also woven into medal ribbons.
Gold in medals obtained without the use of mercury, which is a toxic substance.
At the 2016 Paralympic Games of the Year, visually impaired athletes will be able to hear their medals. For the first time, Paralympic medals will contain tiny steel balls that, when shaken, will sound differently, depending on whether they are gold, silver or bronze.
A total of 2 488 medals were produced: 812 Gold, 812 Silver, and 864 Bronze.
“These medals are one of the main symbols of the Games, and they are the most beautiful in the world,” said Carlos Arthur Nozman, head of the Brazilian Olympic Committee.
