New Jersey raised the minimum age for buying cigarettes
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Friday signed legislation that raised the legal smoking age from 19 to 21.
Note that a similar law has been in effect in New York since 2014.
“By raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21, we are giving young people more time to reach maturity and better understand how dangerous smoking can be and that it is better not to start smoking in the first place,” Christie said.
This age limit applies to the purchase of tobacco products and electronic smoking devices.
According to the latest state figures in 2017, more than 37 000 high school students in New Jersey smoke, and this number is higher than the number of students who smoke electronic cigarettes. Annual healthcare costs directly related to smoking amount to $ 4,06 billion.
The tax rate for tobacco product packaging is $ 20. One percent of tax revenues collected in accordance with the Law on Cigarette Taxes and the Law on Sales Taxes and Tobacco Tax are sent to the health department to finance and implement anti-smoking initiatives in the state.
