The first time the mayor of San Francisco became an African American
London Breed's 43-year-old took the oath of the mayor of San Francisco (California), becoming the first African-American woman to take this post.
Breed became the successor to Mayor Ed Lee, due to the unexpected death of which in December 2017 in the city were held special elections for the head, writes LA Times.
Brid, a native of San Francisco, promises to solve the most pressing problems of the city, including a large number of homeless people, open drug use and too high housing prices.
She intends to build more housing and solve the mental health problems of people living on the streets of the city.
She also intends to provide additional opportunities for development for children from poor families.
Breed grew up in social housing a few blocks from the City Hall. According to her, to many of what she has achieved, she is obliged to the love and support of her grandmother, who was engaged in her upbringing, as well as to the neighbors who noticed her potential and motivated her to learn.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco. Now the woman will receive a salary of 335 996 dollars per year.
Before, Brid was president of the San Francisco Observer Council, a position she held for more than three years.
Bride is a member of the Democratic Party, as are all San Francisco officials.
San Francisco has a population of 870 000 people, 6% of whom are African Americans, is one of the smallest percent of black people among major US cities.
At the moment, Breed got the right to be mayor for a year and a half; in order to occupy this post for full 4 of the year, she will need to win the mayoral election in November of 2019.
Breed is the second woman to become mayor of San Francisco, but the first African-American. The city's first female mayor was current U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.
