A bear killed a man while jogging: now the court must decide her fate and evaluate which life is a priority - human or animal

In Italy, on April 18, a bear was caught who attacked a runner two weeks ago near the small town of Caldes in the Alpine region of the country of Trentino-Alto Adige, reports with the BBC.

The body of 26-year-old Andrea Papi with traces of an animal attack was found on April 6 in a forest belt. His death startled local residents, who are demanding that the authorities keep them safe.

First, the authorities of the province of Trento issued a warrant for the elimination of the animal on the spot. According to them, it was this bear that had already made two attacks in the past. But after the intervention of environmental activists, the court canceled the warrant.

The animal was caught after rangers' dogs picked up a trail in the Dolomiti di Brenta mountains - in the province where the attack took place, but quite far from the scene of the incident.

The bear, listed as JJ4 on the wildlife registry, was taken to a special center. Her future fate has not yet been decided.

On May 11, repeated hearings in court are scheduled, at which the fate of JJ4 will be decided. Trento authorities insist she must be euthanized given her history.

The locals believe that their lives should be a priority.

The bear population in this part of Italy began to be restored about 20 years ago, importing animals from abroad. The program was funded by the European Union. For example, the parents of JJ4 were brought from Slovenia.

Since then, disputes between local residents and environmentalists have constantly arisen in the region.

Bears in Italy are protected by nature conservation law, and by 2021 their population was about 100 individuals. Nature watchdogs keep a record of each animal. However, in recent years their behavior has become more unpredictable and aggressive.

For example, in the same detention center where JJ4 was taken, there is a bear known as M49.
