California congressman initiates trump impeachment

A member of the lower house of the US Congress, a Democrat from California, Brad Sherman, introduced an act of impeachment of Donald Trump, thus beginning the process of removing the current president from his post, writes “Voice of America«.

In a document filed with the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Sherman accused Trump of obstructing justice in the course of investigating Russia's interference in last year’s US presidential election. As an example of such actions, the congressman cited President Trump’s decision to dismiss the FBI Director James Komi.

Brad Sherman acknowledged that the initiative to impeach is the beginning of a very long process. A Democratic colleague from Texas, Al Green, who had previously called for the impeachment of Donald Trump, joined the democrat from California. Leaders of the Democratic Party in Congress have distanced themselves from this initiative in the belief that this measure will only lead to the unity of Trump's supporters, the article says.

Sherman filed an act of impeachment in the House of Representatives the day after the son of the president, Donald Trump Jr., admitted that he met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya during the election campaign. Veselnitskaya allegedly promised to provide him with official information from the Russian authorities, compromising the then rival of Donald Trump in the presidential election, Hillary Clinton.

According to the publication The Hill, Congressman Sherman’s initiative is unlikely to succeed in the House of Representatives controlled by the Republican majority.

According to Sherman, he hopes that his act of impeachment will serve as a warning to the White House administration and create a legal mechanism for removing Trump from the presidency if, in the long run, the Republicans also support this initiative.

Congressman Democrat wants "to start this long-term process in order to protect the country from cases of abuse of power, obstruction of justice, as well as impulsive and ignorant incompetence," quotes Sherman publication The Hill.

In the entire history of the United States, only two presidents were impeached: Andrew Jackson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998. But then both were exonerated by the Senate, which did not get two thirds of the votes needed to raise the charges. In 1974, President Richard Nixon himself resigned and thus avoided impeachment, which he was preparing to take out the US Congress in the wake of the Watergate scandal.
