Texas governor declared 24 state disaster area
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared state-of-the-art 24 districts affected by floods and hurricane winds a disaster area.
“The State of Texas (which has 254 counties) has taken immediate action to direct all available resources to assist those affected,” Abbott said.
As a result of heavy rainfall that caused severe flooding, three people died and at least 12 are missing. In addition, several hundred houses were destroyed or damaged.
“We have streets where there are only one or two houses left standing,” Harley Smith, the state's disaster relief coordinator, told CNN.
The Blanco River, flowing through the city of San Marcos, overflowed its banks - the water level rose to 12 meters.
According to the National Weather Service forecast, strong winds are expected on Monday evening in central and northeastern Texas and in southern Oklahoma, tornadoes and hail are possible. According to meteorologists, for the period from 1 in May, precipitation fell in these areas, six times the norm.
