US Secretary of State fell off his bike and broke his leg
John Kerry fell off his bike and injured his leg near the French city of Scionzier. He was immediately taken by helicopter to one of the clinics in Geneva, reports Reuters.
Kerry canceled visits to Madrid and Paris scheduled for the beginning of the next week. He is going to return to Boston for further treatment, the US State Department said in a statement.
According to his spokesman, John Kerby, 71-year-old Kerry is in a stable condition at a Geneva hospital.
Kerry, whose right thigh was broken, did not lose consciousness; he is optimistic and hopes that he can fully restore his health, his representative added.
The US Secretary of State was in Switzerland for negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program and was scheduled to fly to the Spanish capital on Sunday evening to sign a defense treaty. On Tuesday in Paris, he planned to take part in a ministerial meeting of members of the coalition to fight the Islamic State group.
Now, according to John Kerby, the Secretary of State plans to take part in this meeting remotely.
“Paramedics and a personal physician were on scene accompanying a group of cyclists that included the Secretary of State,” the State Department said in a statement. According to some reports, Kerry's bicycle crashed into the side of the road.
It is known that the US foreign minister is fond of cycling and often takes a bicycle with him.
