The former adviser to the headquarters of Trump Papadopoulos admitted to lying to the FBI
Ex-adviser to the headquarters of the American President George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to giving false evidence to the FBI about communication with foreigners, including citizens of the Russian Federation, the court said.
In August 2017, the newspaper The Washington Post wrote that George Papadopoulos repeatedly tried to organize a meeting between Trump’s entourage and Russian officials. In March 2016, George Papadopoulos sent letters entitled “Meeting with Russian leadership, including Putin.” From March to September, Papadopoulos sent about ten such requests. One of them says that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to personally receive Trump's team. The proposals caused concern among the campaign staff and were ultimately rejected by its then-chief Paul Manafort. Papadopoulos was in contact with the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs. Council spokesman Ivan Timofeev confirmed to the newspaper that the idea of the meeting was “discussed informally” as part of the dialogue between Russia and the United States.
As American law enforcement agencies found out, from 2006 to 2015, Paul Manafort received about $75 million from the then ruling Party of Regions in Ukraine, which was headed by the now fugitive Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. To evade taxes, Manafort used many offshore companies, with the help of which he “laundered and concealed” more than $18 million. His partner Rick Gates embezzled more than three million in this way.
The investigation is being carried out by the prosecutor's office in Manhattan, the central district of New York, together with the team of special prosecutor of the US Department of Justice Robert Mueller and relevant committees of the US Congress. American lawmakers want to find out for sure whether there was any collusion between Russian representatives and any foreign citizens, organizations and companies close to the Kremlin - and any of the aides of Donald Trump, who repeatedly stated during his presidential campaign a desire to build closer and warm ties and cooperation with Moscow.
FBI presented The former head of the election headquarters of President Donald Trump, Paul Manafort, is charged with 12 episodes, including conspiracy against the US authorities, the agency said in a statement.
