The number of anti-Semitic incidents in the US in 2017 increased by 57%

According to The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States in 2017 increased by 57% compared with the previous year.

This is the highest rate of growth for the entire period of the League, writes NBC.

Last year there were 1 986 cases of anti-Semitism in the United States, compared with 1 267 in the 2016 year. This is the largest number of anti-Semitic incidents since 1994 and the largest one-year increase since the group began collecting this data in 1979.

ADL clarified that the sharp increase in the overall rate includes 952 cases of vandalism (an increase of 86% from 2016 of the year) and 1015 cases of harassment, which is 41% more than in 2016 of the year.

Anti-Semitic incidents in schools and on campuses have nearly doubled since 2016, with 457 cases reported in non-Jewish schools.

ADL also counted 19 physical attacks on Jews in the 2017 year, which is 47% less than in the 2016 year.

The persecution incidents included 169 threats of bombing attacks on Jewish institutions, almost all of them committed by two men. The ADL report reported that more than 150 of these threats were made by an 18-year-old Israeli-American hacker who was arrested in Israel in March 2017. In addition, a former St. Louis journalist pleaded guilty to making several calls threatening Jewish organizations.

There were also six incidents in which Jewish institutions became victims of vandalism and persecution for allegedly supporting the promotion of Israel’s interests in the United States.

The ADL calls on Congress to enact laws to extend federal defenses against threats of a bomb in a religious institution.
