While snow fell in the mountains, the rest of the Big Island faced heavy rain and thunderstorms. Flood warnings were issued for Oahu and Kauai. The air temperature was quite high for this time of year - 21-27 degrees Celsius.

Snow on Hawaii's mountain peaks is a fairly common occurrence during the winter, but 2017 saw more than usual. Snow sometimes falls on the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes; the last time it snowed there was in December 2016. The only region in Hawaii where snow falls regularly is the Haleakala volcano on the island of Maui, where snowfall occurs every 5 years.

Meanwhile, over the winter in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, there was so much snow that scientists do not have the tools to measure its depth, reports USA Today.

1 March scientists went to Slide Mountain and Rose Skye Tahoe to measure the depth of snow there, and concluded that their tools do not allow it.

“We're not even close,” noted hydrologist Jeff Anderson after trying to measure the snow depth with a special tube that is more than 16 feet (4,88 meters) long, but the tube never reached the ground.

Measurements were necessary in order to confirm computer data derived from statistical calculations.

In 2017, the Sierra Nevada mountains experienced a winter of historical snow, after California suffered a drought for several years.

According to measurements on the site, the snow cover on Slide Mountain is 212 inches (5,4 meters). At the moment, this is a record figure for the entire measurement period.
