The deadly storm, which led to a record amount of snow and sleet in the southern United States, gradually subsides, but the weather in the region continues to be dangerous.

The storm that killed at least three North Carolina residents resulted in 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) of snow in the southern and central parts of the Appalachian mountain system. This led to hundreds of car accidents, widespread power cuts and the cancellation of more than a thousand flights, writes USA Today.

Tens of schools in Virginia and North Carolina were closed on 10 and December 11. Poweroutage.us reports that, as of Tuesday morning, more than 60 000 homes and businesses remained without electricity in Virginia and both Carols.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said at a press conference on Tuesday that the air temperature in the region could drop to -7 degrees Celsius at night after it rose above zero after a storm hit during the day. This creates a risk of icing on the roads and the occurrence of new accidents.

In some parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, ice fog was observed to the south, which also complicated the situation on the roads.

According to Weather.us, the air temperature in the south on Wednesday will vary from -6 to -1 degrees Celsius. Even in Central Florida, freezing temperatures are possible.

The three deaths in North Carolina included a truck driver who died Sunday after suffering a heart attack while clearing snow. Another man was killed when a tree fell on him in Mecklenburg County. Additionally, a sick woman died in Haywood County after a power outage cut off her oxygen.

The most snow, 34 inches (86 cm), fell in Busiek, North Carolina, according to the National Weather Service. 11,1 inches (28 cm) of snow fell in Asheville, making it the third-largest December snowstorm on record for the city. In Roanoke, Virginia, 15 inches (38 cm) of snow fell, which was the highest December in the city's history.

Another storm is expected in the second half of this week and on weekends in the southeastern United States, however, according to forecasts, it will lead to rain, not snow.

At the same time, residents of many regions of the southern United States were happy about the snowfall, since snow falls extremely rarely in this part of the country - so residents joyfully made snowmen, played snowballs and called the event a pre-Christmas miracle.
