In Texas, an armed man insulted immigrants: he was detained and released

Armed Trump supporter was detained and released by police on Wednesday near an immigrant public space in El Paso, Texas, a few days after mass shooting, which killed 22 people. Writes about this NBC News.

Witnesses said they called the police after 21-year-old Thomas Bartram made threatening comments to people and waved a knife while sitting in his truck near Casa Carmelita community center. His truck was adorned with Trump banners and bumper stickers advertising InfoWars, a site that promotes far-right looks.

“Patrol officers responded to the call. The individual was detained, questioned and released after it was determined that no criminal offense had been committed,” the El Paso Police Department said.

Photos were published a little earlier when Bartram attended the rallies dedicated to the victims of the shooting during a visit by the US president to the city.

By phone, Bartram said he often went to rallies but tried to be respectful of high tensions in El Paso after the shooting — although he said he could not rule out the possibility that the massacre was pre-arranged by the government.

Bartram admitted that he legally carried a gun, but denied that he was brandishing it and said that the presence of gloves and a knife could be explained.

“I ate prickly pears,” he said. The white powder was a protein supplement that Bartram takes along with other nutritional supplements.

Now Bartram is not in El Paso, but on his way to Portland (Oregon) to take part in a protest rally, which, as warned by local authorities, can be used force.

“People may misinterpret my political opinion because they don’t understand it; It’s their right,” he said. “But I’m definitely not a white supremacist.”

Ana Devez, an employee at Casa Carmelita, said police also took a loaded gun, ammunition, and a bag of white powder from a truck. She said the people in the community center are still “scared.” Devez reported that El Paso police confronted witnesses and ultimately concluded that Bartram had not violated any laws.

“He has rights,” the police concluded.

A photo of Bartram appeared in the media, which makes a sign with his hand, often used by supporters of white supremacy, and stands next to his truck, which shows the image of Trump in a Rambo suit.

“I thought it was right to come out and support Trump,” Bartram said in a statement.

Bartram is an active member of the InfoWars community forum and is associated with a YouTube account where he posted two videos. One video shows how he walked with a flag in support of migration reform, while another shows an unknown man who came to a rally in memory of a woman who was killed in May.

Bartram’s brother, Alex Bartram, said his brother went to El Paso with a group of Trump supporters with whom he had been chatting recently.

"He's not a violent person," Alex Bartram said.
