In Syria, fired at the Russian embassy
The Russian Embassy in Damascus on Tuesday, 19 May, was subjected to mortar fire. No casualties, material damage was caused.
As the press secretary of the Russian diplomatic mission Asiya Turuchieva told the agency, 2 mortar shells exploded in the embassy. One of them fell near the main entrance, the other got into the administrative building.
“There were no casualties, since the mortar attack took place during the lunch break,” Turuchyeva noted.
According to the press secretary of the embassy, the Syrian side promised to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the diplomatic mission.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich called the shelling of the Russian embassy in Damascus a terrorist attack.
Members of the UN Security Council condemned the attack on the Russian embassy in Damascus, calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice, said Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN, Raymond Murmokite, after a Security Council meeting on Tuesday.
“Members of the Security Council seriously condemned the terrorist attack on the Russian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which caused serious material damage,” Murmokaite said.
“Council members emphasized the need to bring those responsible for this crime to justice,” she said.
The theme of the attack on the diplomatic mission was raised during the meeting of the UN Security Council by the Russian delegation.
