The UN Security Council will hold a crisis meeting on the situation in Jerusalem

UN Security Council 24 July will hold a crisis meeting on the situation around the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The proposal for its convocation of 22 July made Sweden, France and Egypt, writes DW.

According to Sweden's representative to the UN, Karl Skau, members of the Security Council will hold a meeting on “how and with what we can support the call for de-escalation” of the conflict.

Conflict between Palestinians and Israelis around the Temple Mount escalated sharply on July 21 provocations by Muslims killed at least 8 people (five Palestinians and three Israelis), hundreds were injured.

The tension between the conflicting parties grew after Two armed Arab attackers 14 July shot two Israeli police near the Temple Mount. The attackers were killed after persecution in a sacred place for believers.

At the same time, the Israeli side intensified security measures in East Jerusalem, in particular, metal detectors were installed at the entrance to the Temple Mount. Israel called it a necessary measure after the attackers managed to bring weapons to a sacred place.

The Israeli authorities have declared their readiness to consider various ways of maintaining security on the Temple Mount.

Major General Yoav Mordechai urged the Muslim world to put forward alternative security proposals that could replace the framework, writes Air force.

“We hope Jordan and other Arab countries can come up with a different security solution. Israel is ready for any decision. We need a security solution, not a political or religious one,” he stressed, noting that the country is ready to discuss any digital or cyber technologies that can ensure security near the mosque.

At the same time, the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas 21 July announced the freezing of contacts with Israel at all levels.
