Senate approved by Trump Gorsach as a judge of the US Supreme Court

The US Senate approved Neal Gorsach as a Supreme Court judge.

On April 6, the Republicans managed to put his nomination to a vote, using the so-called “nuclear” option, which changed the rules for holding a debate before voting for a candidate for the position of Supreme Court judge, in force since 1789, reports Reuters.

Under previous rules, any senator could speak before the Senate for as long as he wanted to delay a vote. This tactic is called a “filibuster,” and it’s what Democrats tried to use to delay the vote on Gorsuch’s appointment. When the leadership of the chamber believed that it was time to end the conversations, it put to a vote the question of ending the debate. If 60 senators agreed that arguments could be concluded, the Senate could move to a vote to confirm the judge. Republicans lowered that threshold to 50 votes (a simple majority) and were able to move on to confirm Gorsuch on April 7.

According to the results of the vote 54 senator voted for his appointment, 45 opposed.

One of the 9 seats in the Supreme Court was released after Antonin Scalia died in February 2016, who held his post for 30 years. Barack Obama proposed the appointment of Merrick Garland to the vacant post of chairman of the Court of Appeal for the District of Colombia, but the Republicans who controlled the Senate refused to consider his candidacy, leaving the nomination to the next president.

After his appointment, the longest vacancy in the Supreme Court (it was open during 15 months) in the last 155 years, since the Civil War 1862, closed.

The appointment of Gorsach in the Supreme Court creates a conservative majority of 5 to 4, which gives Trump the opportunity to count on the support of this body in legislative matters, including in a possible protest against the blocking of immigration bans.
