Lettuce in the USA is infected with dangerous Escherichia coli: more than 50 affected
The number of people hospitalized because of an outbreak of E. coli (E. coli) that was found in lettuce continues to grow, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
It has been reported that since 13 in March, 16 cases of infection were reported in 53 states, among which 31 people were hospitalized, and five developed a type of renal failure associated with the disease.
No deaths have been reported by the CDC.
Most of all suffered from E. coli in Pennsylvania, Idaho, New Jersey and Montana.
The outbreak also reached consumers in Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Washington.
Patients usually recover within a week, but in some cases the disease can cause complications, including renal failure.
Symptoms E. coli usually start 2-8 days after bacteria enters the body, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. Those most at risk for E. coli include very young, very old, and people with weakened immune systems.
Health officials issued a warning to residents and restaurants about lettuce. Investigation of outbreak of E. coli continues, and health officials have not yet identified any brand, supplier, distributor or manufacturer as a source of infection.
“Most people reported eating salad at a restaurant, and lettuce was the only common ingredient,” the CDC said in a statement.
Based in Pennsylvania company Fresh Foods Manufacturing Co. released a voluntary reminder on ready-to-eat salads in transparent plastic containers due to possible contamination.
3,9 tons of recalled salads were produced between 9 and April 12 and sold in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Their number is P-40211. Due to the four-day shelf life, products should no longer be in stores.
