93-year-old California man climbs Half Dome in Yosemite National Park

A 93-year-old retired theology professor from California has become the oldest person to scale the famed Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. KATU.

On July 18, Everett Kalin made the grueling 13-hour climb of Half Dome with the help of his son John and granddaughter Sydney after months of training to overcome physical challenges.

Half Dome is a granite rock that is very popular among tourists and one of the symbols of Yosemite National Park.

"When you're over 90, you think, 'What would I like to do?'" Kalin said. “Half Dome came to my mind.”

The path up the rocky terrain is as much as 1,5 km from the bottom of the valley, and the last leg of the ascent goes up an almost vertical section of rock.

Kalin, who tried to skydive at the age of 91, trained by walking around Lake Merritt in Oakland daily and walking up and down the stairs of his 16-story apartment building. He also worked on upper body strength to hook and pull on the cable during the 120m climb.

“He's as stubborn as a mule. When he puts his mind to something, he does it, his son said. “He kept proving me wrong about him every step of the way.”

Climbing to the summit nearly fell through as park rangers at the checkpoint told them there was a 20% chance of thunderstorms, and two official park service warnings mention thunderclouds and recent rain on the trails. These were good reasons to abandon the ascent.

Rangers also warn would-be climbers to start their hike at dawn so they can reach the summit by around 15:30 pm in order to get down while it's still light. Those who do not have time to climb to the top before this time need to go back, wherever they are.

“I'm just really grateful to the people who made this possible,” Kalin said. “Actually, I feel great.”
