DC will be 51 US state
The residents of the District of Columbia overwhelmingly supported the initiative to transform the US capital into 51 state. Voters express the hope that the results of the voting will put pressure on the new composition of the Congress and the President so that they pay attention to the lack of representation of the capital district in the Congress.
Although district residents pay federal taxes and serve in the army, they do not have senators, and only 1 is a congressman without voting authority.
“Even though we perform all the functions of a state, Washingtonians do not enjoy the rights of all Americans,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a speech to the Democratic National Committee in June.
The draft change in administrative status indicates that even after Colombia becomes a state, a federal district with government structures will remain on its territory.
After the referendum, Congress must draft legislation to grant statehood to Colombia. Then this bill must be approved by the Upper and Lower Houses of the US Parliament, and finally signed by the President.
If this happens, it will be regarded as a truly historical event. The last new states appeared in 1959 - Alaska, which became the 49th state, and Hawaii (the 50th state).
