A powerful winter storm hit the Midwest

The storm that December 27 led to the abolition of a football game at a college in Texas because of unrelenting thunderstorms with lightning, also brought a blizzard to the regions of the Middle West and threatened the emergence of traffic chaos from Minnesota to Kansas.

Snow warnings apply in parts of Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. In some areas, up to 18 inches (457 mm) of snow is expected, as well as steady winds of 15-30 miles (24-48 km) per hour with gusts from 35 to 50 miles (56-80 km) per hour, writes USA Today.

Kansas Governor Jeff Collier declared a state of emergency in the state.

“We hope travelers will use wisdom, pay attention to weather warnings and not unnecessarily expose themselves to danger during the storm,” Collier said.

The National Weather Service warned that traveling on slippery roads is dangerous, especially in areas where there are warnings of snowstorms.

According to forecasts, the air temperature will decrease as the storm develops and will reach -6 -15 degrees Celsius.

AccuWeather is predicted to have a wet weather belt with sleet and freezing rain from central and northern Kansas to southeastern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. Sleet may freeze on the wires and branches of trees, which threatens to turn off the electricity.

In addition, severe thunderstorms that can lead to a tornado, December 27 are expected in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and in west Tennessee. Severe thunderstorms are also possible in parts of Iowa, western Illinois, and northern Missouri.
