Queens protests of Muslims because of the murder of a local imam

A crowd of Muslims gathered in the streets of New York’s Queens district to express their outrage at the murder of the imam by the site of the Al-Furqan Maulama Akondji mosque, which occurred on August 13.

Several dozen protesters claim that the crime was committed on the basis of hatred against Muslims, writes Reuters.

Police say that the investigation has just begun and there is no reason to say that Akondji was killed because of religious contradictions.

According to police, the murder most likely occurred as a result of an attempted robbery.

The 55-year-old Imam and his 64-year-old assistant left the mosque and walked down the street when an unknown armed man approached them and shot them in the head. Maulama Akondji died on the spot, his assistant in serious condition was taken to hospital where he soon died.

The killer was seen by several passers-by, but he could not be detained without delay.

Akonji came to the United States from Bangladesh two years ago. Most of the Al-Furqan Mosque's congregants are also members of New York's Bangladeshi diaspora.

“At such moments we understand how unprotected we are. Our future is under threat, our peaceful life in this area is under threat - and we demand justice!” said one of the mosque parishioners and a participant in the action.
