Mogherini: sanctions against Russia will not be discussed at the EU summit
European diplomacy chief Federica Mogherini does not expect EU leaders to discuss the issue of Russian sanctions at a summit on Thursday — immediately after reaching an agreement on a cease-fire in Ukraine at the talks in Minsk.
Mogherini called the Minsk Agreement important, but not decisive. “I don’t think we will discuss sanctions today,” she told reporters.
“We are currently working on ... to use all the means at the disposal of the EU to ensure compliance with the agreements,” she said. - We will discuss it today at the summit. There are a number of key things that the EU can do from the moment the cease-fire regime takes effect on Sunday. ”
On Monday, the European Union decided not to include additional names of Russians and Ukrainians in its sanctions list in order to give a chance to the peace plan proposed by France and Germany. It was also stated that if successful at the negotiations in Minsk, the expansion of the list could be canceled altogether.
Mogherini said that this issue would most likely not be discussed on Thursday: “Today the main subject of discussion will be how to help support that weak ray of hope for a resolution of the conflict. We have to invest all our strength in making this ray brighter, ”writes AmericaRu.com
