Mexican skier became the star of the Olympics, although he came to the finish line last

Mexican athlete Herman Madrazo, who participated in the 15-kilometer men's ski race at the Phenchhane Olympiad, finished the last. But this alone is an achievement.

Unlike most Olympic athletes who have been trained since childhood, Madrazo first started skiing a little over a year ago when he was 42 of the year. And after months of hard training, I was able to qualify for the Olympics! Moreover, he was entrusted to carry the flag of Mexico at the opening ceremony of the Games.

Madraso overcame 15 kilometers with his free style in 59,35 minutes, behind the winner of the race, Swiss Dario Cologna, by almost 26 minutes. Despite this, he was applauded by fans and other participants of the competition. At the finish line one of the spectators handed the Mexican flag to the athlete - and Madrazo finished, proudly lifting it over his head. After that, the other finalists picked him up; Dario Cologna, who took the gold medal, came up to congratulate Madrazo. Speech skier called the real triumph of the Olympic spirit.

Prior to that, Madrazo lived in Texas, ran and triathlon, participated in competitions Ironman and owned a sporting goods store. He decided to go cross-country skiing after reading an article about the Peruvian skier Roberto Carselan and met him and other athletes from South America. Training and a trip to the Olympics cost Madrazo a large sum, which is why he even had to sell one of his racing bikes. He says that he is in love with the ski race and is going to do it while he can move.

The athlete from Tonga, Pita Taufatofua, who participated in taekwondo competitions at the Rio Olympics, became a fellow practitioner of Madrazo. He also decided to try his hand at skiing in a free style and managed to qualify for the Olympics. Taufatofua came in this race 114 (from 119 starting athletes), 3 minutes ahead of Herman Madrazo.
