Yosemite National Park in California will increase by 162 ha
Yosemite National Park, California, will soon have more trails for walking - 162 hectares of land have been donated to the park.
This is Yosemite’s most significant expansion over the past 70 years, writes Share America.
The territory transferred to the park is known as Ekerson's meadow, it is located along the western border of the park. There is marshes, and the grassy meadow is surrounded by pine trees. Low hills shelter endangered wildlife.
The plot was purchased from private owners by the conservation organization Foundation for Public Lands for $ 2,3 ml and donated to the park.
Previously, this land was used for logging and grazing, now come wild animals.
Since 2006, Robin and Nancy Wainwright have owned it. According to Robin Wainwright, having sold the land to the Fund, they lost “several hundred thousand dollars”, but refused a more lucrative offer made by the developer who planned the construction of the resort complex.
Robin says he often saw bears walking in a meadow and owls hovering over fields of wild flowers. Wainwright didn’t want that only those who could afford a vacation in an expensive resort complex could see it all.
“For me it is very important that access to these beauties is open to all. It’s not a pity to lose some money, ”said Robin.
