Tens of thousands of Cuban criminals can be deported from the US

Completion of the policy of granting a residence permit in the United States to Cuban illegal immigrants (known as “wet foot, dry foot”) will result in the deportation of 28 Cuban immigrants who have committed felonies in the United States, including more than 400 murders.

Discussion of deportation began between the countries in 2015, after the resumption of diplomatic relations, it was only possible to reach an agreement at the beginning of 2017, after which US President Barack Obama abolished the “wet foot - dry foot” policy. It provided for the provision of residence permits to all Cubans who set foot on American soil, even if they entered the country illegally.

Now Cuba has declared its readiness to accept the deportees, “who have violated the law in the United States, who can no longer remain in the territory of the country”, while the discussion of each particular case will take place individually. In addition, Havana advised the US to focus on “those whose deportation is a priority.”

Migration lawyers believe that this process will be very long, since the statements of the Cuban authorities are very non-specific, and moreover, only Cubans who can’t give a reason to stay in the United States will be able to deport them. Such legal proceedings also take time.

In addition, American authorities said that they could not control in which cases the Cuban government would agree to accept deportees and in which cases it would not.

Lawyers also suggest that, according to the logic of things, Cuba, in response, should deport dozens of Americans “fleeing justice on the island’s territory”. However, official statements on this issue has not yet been.

In addition, 6 700 Cubans who committed non-criminal violations of US law are also subject to deportation, including those who did not apply for permanent residence in the States after living in the country for a year or more.

The United States and Cuba announced at the end of 2014, the beginning of work on the gradual normalization of relations. Since then, 2 countries have restored diplomatic relations, the US has loosened some sanctions against Cuba, and Obama visited the capital of this island nation.
