State Department recommends that Americans do not go to Mexico
The US State Department issued a warning for Americans traveling to certain parts of Mexico.
The warning is associated with an increase in criminal activity in some parts of Mexico, says Online departments.
Among other regions, Americans are advised to refrain from traveling to Baja California Surwhere is the popular tourist site of Cabo San Lucas, and in Quintana Roowhere Cancun and Riviera Maya are located, since there was a surge in the kill rate in 2017.
“U.S. citizens have been victims of violent crime, including murder, kidnapping, auto theft, and robbery in various parts of Mexico,” the State Department said in a statement.
The notice also notes that "gunfights between rival criminal organizations or between gangsters and Mexican authorities took place in the streets and public places in Mexico during the daytime," but the State Department does not have evidence that criminal groups in Mexico deliberately attack Americans specifically, based on their nationality.
Mexico has state checkpoints operated by military or law enforcement officials in the country, but in some areas criminal organizations have created their own “unauthorized checkpoints” and killed or kidnapped those who did not stop for “screening” at these points . In a State Department warning, Americans are advised to "cooperate at all checkpoints."
