Pentagon chief shocked by US low alert

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said at a congressional hearing that he was shocked by the low combat readiness of the American army.

“I left the army 3 months after the sequester came into force. After 4 years, I returned to the ministry and was shocked by what I saw regarding our readiness to fight,” the minister said.

According to him, to remedy the situation, the US armed forces will need years of stable funding.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Army, General Joseph Dunford, also spoke at the hearing. He stated that the 5 biggest challenges for the United States at present are Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and extremist organizations.

Dunford said that Russia is still trying to limit the ability of the United States to fulfill its obligations to NATO, including by building capacity in cyberspace and space.

In mid-February, Mattis said that the United States is not ready to cooperate with Russia in the military sphere. He called on Moscow to abide by the commitments that Russia assumed under the agreement with NATO.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, has repeatedly reproached the United States and NATO for expanding the air defense system in Europe.
