Russia has become the European leader in the number of HIV-infected

While the world has seen a downward trend in the number of HIV-infected people, their number is rapidly growing in Russia.

In 2016, the annual increase in the number of HIV-infected people in this country for the first time exceeded 100 thousand, reports the publication Berliner Zeitung.

For comparison, in Germany the annual increase is 3 200 new cases.

While in the world since 2010, the number of new HIV infections is declining, in Eastern Europe and Asia, these figures are increasing. The largest increase is observed in Russia. Since 1987, more than 1,1 a million people have become infected with the immunodeficiency virus in this country. According to official data, almost 244 thousands of people died of AIDS in Russia during this period. The real number can be much higher.

Despite the fact that in Russia there is a state strategy to counteract the spread of HIV infection up to the year 2020, only every fifth HIV-infected person in the country has access to antiretroviral therapy. On average, in the world, 46% of those infected have access to such therapy.

In addition, for reasons of economy, the Russian Ministry of Health purchases primarily cheap generic drugs, many of which are already outdated. According to Vadim Pokrovsky, an epidemiologist from the Russian Academy of Sciences, there has been a “conservative turn” in Russian society, with a clearly expressed negative attitude towards risk groups - drug addicts and homosexuals.

International organizations to combat HIV have to be registered in Russia as “foreign agents”.

Particularly dramatic is the situation in prisons. Many prisoners suffer from numerous infections - HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis, there is also the threat of the spread of microorganisms.
