As Halloween approaches, creepy creatures take center stage as they are the epitome of nightmares.

But according to one recent study, the truly scary things for Americans are not the creatures that inspire fear in horror films and nightmares.

Researchers SafeHome.org surveyed 2634 American adults about how afraid they were of various scenarios. Top categories this year included political fears, crime, personal health and climate issues.

The most popular fear scenario is “death of loved ones” with a “fear rating” of 99 out of 100.

Participants were asked to answer on a scale where “Very afraid” was 3 points, “Afraid” was 2 points, “Somewhat afraid” was 1 point, and “Not afraid” was 0 points.

The second highest rated fear scenario was “loved ones getting seriously ill” with a fear score of 98, just one point less than the first place score.

Next comes “personally becoming seriously ill” with a fear score of 86. It is possible that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the ranking of this fear scenario.

In fourth place in the ranking is “not enough money for retirement.” According to Anytime Estimate, The average amount Americans save for retirement is just $71. People should have at least $500 by age 40, according to Fidelity Investments.

Rounding out the top five most frightening scenarios are mass shootings/gun violence. According to the archive Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 550 mass shootings in the United States this year. They define a mass shooting as four or more people killed in one incident, not including the shooter.

US entry into another world war was ranked 10th, and corrupt government officials were ranked 7th most dangerous scenario.

Another pandemic such as COVID-19 ranked 25th.

Some of the least fear-inducing scenarios included alien abduction with a fear score of 14 and a ghost attack with a fear score of 20.
